Real Party: Tea Time for Toddlers

This weeks party feature isn't what you would expect. But then again, two year olds have a mind of their own. Here is a late night tea party for one little girl, with the expectation that when her sister woke up in the morning, they would share a cup together. She set it up and demanded the party be left exactly as is until the morning. Here it is...

We're pretty sure we are going to need to throw an official tea party soon, with little friends running to and fro in dresses and hats and so. Here are some invitation ideas that would work well.

How sweet it is!

Top Ten Tuesday: Dad Day Giveaway

UPDATE: Congrats to Alana! Our winner for this giveaway!

In honor of our Top Ten Tuesday, we are going to give you ten reasons why you should enter our latest giveaway. In honor of Father's Day, Express Yourself is offering up one copy of the new Chronicle cookbook Eat Like A Man with Esquire food editor Ryan D'Agostino.

Our top ten reasons why you should enter...
10. Because you read yesterday's post.
9. Father's Day is almost here and you don't have a gift.
8. Did you see the cover? Even this flexitarian is getting hungry.
7. It includes a free subscription to Esquire.
6. When is a man not hungry?
5. There are seventy-five recipes. We figure it would take the average man approximately one year to complete all of them. That should give the editors plenty of time to produce volume two.
4. Bacon. It's in there somewhere.
3. It truly is a manly cookbook. Unapologetically so.
2. Because it's free, courtesy of us. Totally.
1. Banana Bread French Toast. Need we say more?

We didn't think so.
Simply Post A Comment below letting us know which man in your life this gift would go to!

Entries are accepted until Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10 AM MST, at which time comments will close and contest will end. We will then randomly draw a winner and notify them via comment on the blog -and- via contact information. One entry per person. Good luck!

Gift Guide: Father's Day

With Father's Day fast approaching, here are some of our easy gift selections for any Dad (and not one tie in sight!). And of course, starting with the card:

Easily one of our favorite, and funniest, card lines we carry. This Father's Day card from Hard Cards is suitable for more than one gift giver we know.

We've got several copies of this cookbook from Esquire on our shelves. It may be the only cookbook a man will ever need, but we're also pretty sure any man would l.o.v.e. anything you make for him from this masterpiece. The best part? It includes a free subscription to Esquire.

And then there is this Moustache Growers Guide in stock too. An illustrated guide to all the types of moustaches a man can groom and grow.

Let's not forget the golfers out there. For the more sophisticated and classic daddy, you can give him a set of golf notes from Crane & Co.

Then there are always the new dads to fete and an annual favorite comes to mind. The Scout (diaper) bag. That's right, a manly diaper bag for dad. Just because he gets out of changing diapers on Father's Day does not mean he can irk his daddy duties the other 364 days. And it's in our favorite color too.

For something to commemorate this new, and growing, family check out this custom family tree on etsy.

The road (bike) warrior might appreciate this recycled bike chain frame. We've got plenty waiting for that photo of dad with his bike - maybe kiddos on the trike.

Treating dad to a movie night at home? Then we suggest you do not forget the popcorn. This popcorn in particular. Really, what man does not love bacon?!? (We can - and will - do an entire post on bacon alone!)

He can (visually) wash down his bacon corn with this dedication to nothing but beer cans. This book will certainly look better on the table than that dusty, rusty old college collection lining the windowsill in the basement.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for an exciting Dad Day Giveaway!

Project: Vintage School Chairs

We found these. In an alley behind our house. Waiting for the trashman. And just begging to come home with us.

They were in horrible shape. One of the seats original wood could certainly not be salvaged. But we were determined to make something of them. Just too cute to pass up. So armed with some easy and inexpensive tools, we set out.

Two coats of primer, some strategic taping and a few coats of color later, this is what we had.

Perfect tea party chairs for two perfectly cute little girls. The oldest picked out the paint colors and was thrilled to see her purple and turquoise chairs in her room. We started the project as soon as they went down for an afternoon nap and we were done just a few hours later (with lots of down time during the project to let the coats of paint dry). Total cost was under $15. A quick and easy DIY project, which is exactly what we love to do!

Places: Summer in Basalt, Colorado, Vol. 1

Summer is here and that means one thing for us - we are ready to get out of the city and head to the mountains. Naturally, our first stop (and many stops thereafter) will be Basalt. We lived there and loved it and always go back. And we enjoy sharing this special town with our kids. Can't forget our business is still there too!
{via}

Here is an article written a couple summers ago about traveling to Basalt - don't you love how in small towns, not a lot changes! I believe all the links and resources are still true. Check it out, let us know what we should add. We know there are more great places to eat, sleep, play and shop. After our visit next weekend for BASH, we'll be sure to do another Basalt update.

Weekend in Basalt, Colorado
Nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley, just three hours from Denver, lies the unexplored gem of Basalt, Colorado - offering summer activities, shopping, dining and cultural experiences that rival it’s neighbors of Aspen and Snowmass. While everyone wants to be in Aspen this summer, not everyone will experience the satisfaction of exploring all that Basalt has to offer. Pack your bags and travel to the mountains for a perfect weekend getaway where you will discover this delightfully peaceful mountain town.
Where to Stay
Located on the Frying Pan River is the Lodge at River’s Edge. Riverfront access abounds on this two-acre gem and when the water doesn’t tempt you, a short walk into town for lunch or dinner might be on the agenda. Whether you are looking to stay in the 5-bedroom lodge, the Garden Room suite or the Cabin, this property boasts every accommodation option for you and your guests. 970-927-4991
Nestled in the heart of Downtown Basalt, the Green Drake Motel offers reasonable accommodations with the easiest access to the best of Basalt. Perfect for a couple, family or a group of fly-fishers or sightseers, this property offers almost two-dozen different rooming options, from standard rooms to kitchenettes to two-bedroom suites. 800-905-6797
Just across the street you will find the Aspenalt Lodge, the most economical lodging choice with simple, efficient rooms. Ask to be on the river side, where your room overlooks the Frying Pan River. Your nightly rate includes a continental breakfast, although you may want to skip it and head around the corner for the best breakfast in town! 970-927-3191
Where to Play
Along the stretch of railway that this town was originally settled for runs the Rio Grande Trail, an impressive paved path that stretches from Basalt to Aspen. Rent a bike at Basalt Bike and Ski (970-927-3460) for a morning ride to Woody Creek, where the locally famous and eclectic Woody Creek Tavern (970-923-4585) awaits you with tempting burgers and rewarding margaritas. Be sure to hire High Mountain Taxi (970-925-8294) to bring you back down valley!
Running from Ruedi Dam to Downtown, the Frying Pan River is just one of the two Gold metal waters that fly-fishers will enjoy in Basalt. Visit Taylor Creek (970-927-4374) in Basalt Center Circle to hire a fly-fishing guide or stock up on your equipment needs.
The confluence of the Frying Pan and the Roaring Fork River, another Gold medal treasure, is in the heart of Downtown Basalt. Rafters and kayakers will enjoy a trip on the Roaring Fork, especially if partaking in the adventuresome journey through Slaughterhouse, a class IV section of the upper Roaring Fork. Less intrepid visitors can opt to raft the middle or lower sections of the river, especially good for beginners or young children. Blazing Adventures (1-800-282-7238) can arrange your river excursion, as well as biking, hiking, jeeping and sunset dinner trips.
Where to Wine and Dine
For a quick morning bite and cup of joe to go, your best bet is Saxy’s (970-927-8585), conveniently located at the end of Midland Avenue in Downtown Basalt. They also offer tasty salads and panini sandwiches for a no-fuss lunch option.
The best morning buns in town can be found at Café Bernard (970-927-4292). Owner Bernard can be spotted doing the fine dinners in the evening, while his wife Cathy cooks up the breakfast and lunch fare. A small restaurant well worth the wait for morning nosh, the country French-inspired menu is sure to please sightseers and cowboys alike.
Looking for lunch to take with you on your daytime adventure? Look no further than Val’s Gourmet (970-927-3007). An appealing deli set on Midland Avenue, the sandwich options are foodie inspired and worth every penny. Don’t miss the BLT, a classic favorite that you’ll be craving long after your visit.
After your river outing or hike about town, settle on the back deck at Riverside Grill (970-927-9301) with a cold one. Surrounded by local wildlife (both natural and human) this is the prefect spot to kick up those dusty hiking boots and dry out from the water with the Frying Pan river flowing just feet from your own.
Housed in an old house long standing in Downtown Basalt is Tempranillo (970-927-3342). A Spanish-Italian inspired restaurant serving lunch and dinner, the tapas, pastas and entrees will more than satisfy your epicurean desires. The extensive wine menu offers plenty of cocktail hour options as well, where you can sit at the community table and meet the neighbors of this quaint town.
Located just a few minutes down the road from Downtown Basalt, in the neighborhood of Willits, is Smoke (970-927-5158). Once you step inside, you won’t believe you are in the mountains anymore. A clean, modern, community restaurant serving the best BBQ this side of the Continental Divide.
Next door is some of the best Mexican food the valley has to offer. El Korita Restaurant (970-963-4600) expanded their space to this newer building, yet most nights there is still a wait to be had and a worthy one at that! Put your name in, get a drink at the bar, and prepare to delight in another local favorite.
Where to Shop
Starting at the east end of Downtown Basalt, your first stop should be Fraiche, a modern and simple home and lifestyle store offering beautiful gifts for you and your friends. Around the corner is the Kitchenstore, purveyor of everything kitchen! Any bon vivant will love to browse the tall aisles of equipment, accessories, cookbooks and tools. Caddy corner on Midland Avenue is Express Yourself, a fine stationery and gift boutique offering exquisite paper, unique gifts and cards and invitations. Peruse the plethora of wares for pure delight and order yourself a little something personalized. Next door is Midland Clothing, with the most unique garment and accessory brands for women, children and kids – surprisingly chic for this small mountain town. Down the street is Heirlooms, a consignment store offering a fast rotation of merchandise that often finds its way there from the merchants and homes of Aspen. Shop early and shop often during your visit. Finally, stop off at Midland Shoe for the perfect mountain footwear, from casual to formal occasions. Stilettos you will not find here, but rather quality leather boots, flats and sandals that can take you anywhere. Further on near the four-way stop is the Toklat Gallery. Once housed in famous Ashcroft, just outside of Aspen, this local fine art retailer presents some of the most unique artisan pieces from around Colorado.

Real Celebration: Meghan and Tom in Aspen, Colorado

Here's a peek at a wedding we worked on this past weekend in Aspen.

The bride looked amazing and we simply adore her headpiece. And those shoes! The ceremony was originally scheduled on the wedding deck atop Aspen Mountain, but the wind sent everyone inside. It ultimately came together wonderfully. The touches of gold and blue were perfectly suited for the day. We love it when all the details just seems to work out as if it was originally meant to be that way. The celebration continued via gondola downhill at Montagna at The Little Nell. Many thanks to Robin Proctor Photography for sharing these wonderful images. A great celebration with true, classic style. Enjoy!

{Many cheers to Meghan and Tom!}

P.S. And here are a couple shots of pre-wedding stationery and welcome goodies for guests. A travel and accommodation information card kept guests in the know and a welcome box by theHELLOtote (yes, that's us!) kept family and friends hydrated, fed and on the go.
